Our Montenegro road trip was the third country we have self-driven, after Italy and Jordan, and it came out on top. Within one week we had a bay, a cable car, a blue cave, a mountain lake and a party town, all reachable by an easy drive. This guide gives you the full itinerary, how renting a car at the airport worked, how Montenegro compares with the other two, the visa rules as they stand in October 2026, and the real costs in USD, INR and AED.
Why a Montenegro road trip beat Italy and Jordan
Tuscany was beautiful and Jordan’s desert landscapes were stunning, but a Montenegro road trip packs everything into short distances: sea, bay, lakes, mountains and green hills. For a short trip it also covers three moods at once: nightlife, nature and history. The roads were good almost everywhere, and the other drivers were the politest we have met anywhere. That is a big deal if, like me, you are an anxious driver.
The 7-night Montenegro road trip itinerary
Arrival: Tivat airport and your rental car
We landed at Tivat airport, which is among the most beautiful airports we have seen, second only to Seychelles in our book. The rental desk was about 100 to 200 metres away. We went with a local company ([COMPANY NAME + LINK]), and the process was smooth: we were out of the airport area in about 20 minutes. Because the airport sits on the outskirts, there is little traffic around it, which makes a calm first drive.
Stop 1: Kotor and the Bay of Kotor
Kotor is built around the Bay of Kotor. We stayed in a place with a bay view, close enough to walk down and swim. We travelled at the end of May, when the water was around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, so it was cold for us.
- Blue Cave boat tour: A shared boat picked us up. The caves are beautiful, and the guide lets you swim. I managed about 20 seconds. Marine life is limited to small fish, so do not expect anything like the Maldives.
- Cable car and sunset: We took the cable car up, had dinner at a very posh restaurant and moved on to a bar with a party scene, where the sunset was incredible.
- Kotor Old Town: A compact area, roughly a 500-metre radius, with small ancient buildings that belong to a UNESCO World Heritage site. We shopped a little and visited a couple of bars.
Stop 2: a mountain lake resort and Black Lake
To reach our next stop we drove the car onto a ferry, which is a fun experience in itself. Our resort sat at altitude overlooking a lake with a walking trail around it. It had peacocks, alpacas, goats and horses, and we slept in a hut with a small living room downstairs and the bed upstairs.
The next day we visited Black Lake (Crno Jezero). We parked a couple of kilometres out at the gate and walked the rest of the way. The lake walk is easy, the photos were some of our best, and it matched the winter forest lake I had imagined in my own novel.
Stop 3: Budva
Budva is the party capital of Montenegro, especially around its Old Town. Our resort was in the middle of town, a little expensive, but the sea was right in front of us and the shore was full of people relaxing. The pasta was excellent everywhere in Montenegro, and we made friends from the USA and Austria at a random bar one night.
Driving on a Montenegro road trip: roads, etiquette and car rental
Roads were good throughout. Around Kotor some stretches are so narrow that only one vehicle can pass, yet nobody honked at us. Drivers coming the other way stopped, waited and let us through. My wife drove in many parts of the country with no stress.
For the car rental, we found the local airport company cheaper than the big international brands, although we did not run a formal price comparison, so check a few quotes yourself.
Montenegro visa rules for Indians and UAE residents (updated October 2026)
Rules change often, so confirm with the Montenegrin Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you book your Montenegro road trip. As of October 2026:
- Indian passport holders need a visa by default, but a valid US, Schengen, UK or Irish visa or residence permit allows up to 30 days of visa-free entry, which is how we entered on our US visas. (Wego explainer on Montenegro visas for Indians)
- UAE residents: a temporary scheme let eligible residents enter visa-free for up to 10 days between 1 May and 1 October 2026. It required three years of continuous UAE residency and a direct flight from the UAE, among other conditions, and it has now ended. (Gulf News report on the scheme, Khaleej Times report)
In our video we said this window ends in October. It actually ended on 1 October, so please do not plan around it.

For a short trip, Montenegro is one of the best driving destinations we have tried. You get nightlife, nature and history within easy driving distance, good roads and courteous drivers. If you can enter without a visa hassle, it is hard to beat for a week.
